Keeping your horse happy and healthy

Feeding:

While good fresh grass is ideal, hay is an important source of nutrition for horses. Always try to give hay that is as fine-stemmed, soft, green and leafy, and do not use hay hay that is excessively sun-bleached, or smells moldy, musty, dusty. You should also include a salt lick or mineral block in the paddock.

Supplements:

Regular working horses may need additional supplements. Consult your veterinarian for suitable like Omega-3’s which are necessary for the horse’s diet.

Water:

Like all life, fresh clean water should always be available to horses. Dehydration can cause poor health and be deadly. Unclean water can also have bacteria or viruses that can make your horse sick. Troughs and waterers must be cleaned frequently.

Grooming:

Grooming is also essential horse care. More than just brushing the horse a quick grooming every day helps increase blood circulation and gives you the chance to check your horse’s body, especially the parts of the body that will come into contact with tack.

Stable:

Horses spend a lot of their time inside stalls. Good horse care and safety required barns, sheds, and stalls to be suitably designed. Stalls, fences, windows and doors, walls and ceilings should be free of dangers and the proper size for your horse. Your horse needs enough room to move around.

Company:

A very important element for a horse’s mental health is the need of companionship, whether that be another horse, donkey, mule or pony or even a sheep or goat. Just like most people, hanging out with other horses will keep him calm and happier.

Exercise:

Daily exercise is essential for the overall health of your horse.

A daily workout has many benefits such as increasing stamina, endurance, and improving the functioning of the heart and lungs. A basic exercise can be a simple four part routine: warm up, stretching, workout exercise, and cool-down.
